Dr Flanders: evidence mindfulness changes the brain

Can we train our brains as we train working out or playing a musical instrument?

Dr. Joe Flanders is the founder and director of MindSpace. He obtained his PhD in Clinical Psychology from McGill University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Dr. Flanders is an assistant professor in the McGill University Psychology Department.


He has been teaching Mindfullness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) since 2010 and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) since 2015. Joe trains mindfulness teachers through his affiliation with McGill University and the Centre for Mindfulness Studies. In addition to his work at the MindSpace Clinic, he teaches mindfulness in professional settings to physicians, psychologists, teachers, addictions workers, business executives, and athletes, and appears frequently in the media as a mindfulness subject matter expert.


He has trained with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Zindel Segal, Patricia Rockman, Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, and Sharon Salzberg, and has sat meditation retreats at the Insight Meditation Society (Barre, MA), the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness, the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness, and the Centre for Mindfulness Studies in Toronto.
